Félicette

The Cat Who Went to Space

In October 1963, a small black-and-white stray cat from the streets of Paris made history by becoming the first — and only — cat ever to travel to space! 🌟

France was racing to explore space, and scientists chose a scrappy little cat named Félicette from a group of 14 street cats. She was brave, calm, and smart — perfect for the mission.

On October 18th, Félicette launched aboard a French Véronique rocket from the Sahara Desert in Algeria. She soared 157 kilometres above Earth, experienced weightlessness for about 5 minutes, and then safely parachuted back down to the ground!

Scientists were amazed — Félicette survived the whole adventure perfectly. She had tiny sensors attached to her to help scientists learn what happens to living creatures in space. Her bravery helped pave the way for human space travel.

Sadly, for many years people forgot about Félicette. But in 2019, a beautiful bronze statue of her was unveiled in Paris — her paws outstretched, gazing up at the stars forever. 🐾

Fun Fact!

Félicette's flight lasted only 15 minutes, but she traveled faster than a bullet — 8,000 km/h!

Unsinkable Sam

During World War II, there was a cat so lucky — or perhaps so clever — that sailors nicknamed him "Unsinkable Sam." His real story is one of the most incredible survival tales ever!

Sam started life as a ship's cat aboard the famous German battleship Bismarck. When the Bismarck was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean in May 1941, Sam was found floating on a cushion among the wreckage, described as "angry but unharmed." A British ship rescued him!

The British crew renamed him Oscar and took him aboard HMS Cossack. But a few months later — the Cossack was torpedoed and badly damaged! Sam survived again.

Next, Sam was transferred to HMS Ark Royal, one of Britain's most famous aircraft carriers. You can probably guess what happened next... the Ark Royal was also torpedoed! Sam was found floating on a board, once again described as "angry but unharmed."

After THREE shipwrecks, the navy decided Sam had used enough of his nine lives at sea. He was retired to land, living happily in Belfast and then London. His portrait still hangs in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England! 🎨

Fun Fact!

Sam is the only cat known to have survived three shipwrecks. Sailors believed he brought luck — as long as HE survived!

In a small town in Japan called Kinokawa, a tiny railway line was in big trouble. The Kishigawa Line was losing money and the train company was thinking about shutting it down forever.

Then something magical happened. A stray tortoiseshell cat named Tama, who lived near Kishi Station, started greeting passengers every day at the station entrance. People absolutely LOVED her! She was so friendly and adorable that travellers started coming from all over Japan just to see her.

In 2007, the railway made it official — Tama was appointed as the OFFICIAL station master of Kishi Station! She wore a tiny custom-made stationmaster's cap and had her own little office at the ticket booth.

Tama became a superstar. Tourist numbers to the tiny station shot up by 17% in her first year alone. Economists estimated she brought over 1 BILLION yen (about £6 million!) to the local area through tourism.

The railway created a special Tama train decorated with cat illustrations. The town even made Tama a "Super Station Master" and then a Goddess! When Tama passed away in 2015, thousands of people came to pay their respects. Her successor, Nitama (meaning "Second Tama"), continues the tradition today. 🐾

Fun Fact!

Tama received an official salary — paid entirely in cat food! She was the only female in a management position at the entire railway company.

Simon

The Bravest Cat in the Navy

In 1948, a scrappy black-and-white kitten snuck aboard a British warship called HMS Amethyst in Hong Kong. He was only about a year old, thin and hungry, with scars on his face. The sailors named him Simon and he quickly became their beloved mascot.

Simon was a brilliant ship's cat. He kept the rats away from the food stores, visited sick sailors in the medical bay to cheer them up, and slept in the captain's hat (much to everyone's amusement!).

Then in April 1949, during the Chinese Civil War, the Amethyst was sent up the Yangtze River on a mission. Suddenly, the ship was attacked! Shells hit the ship, killing 17 crew members. Simon was found under a burnt-out gun, badly injured — his paws burned, fur singed, and whiskers gone.

Everyone thought Simon wouldn't survive. But he did. And within weeks, despite his injuries, he was back on his feet — patrolling the ship, catching rats, and visiting wounded sailors to comfort them. The crew said Simon's bravery boosted their spirits more than anything else during the three terrible months they were trapped on the river.

When Simon finally returned to Britain, he was awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal — the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour. He remains the only cat ever to receive this award. ⭐

Fun Fact!

Simon was officially 'promoted' to Able Seacat during the voyage. He had his own service record, just like a human sailor!

Stubbs

The Cat Who Was Mayor for 20 Years

In the tiny town of Talkeetna, Alaska (population: about 900 people!), residents were unhappy with all the human candidates running for mayor in 1997. So they decided to do something completely brilliant — they wrote in the name of a local orange tabby cat named Stubbs.

Stubbs won! And he served as the honorary mayor of Talkeetna for an incredible 20 years!

Every single afternoon, Mayor Stubbs had a very important routine: he would walk from his home to the local general store, where he enjoyed his favourite drink — water with a tiny bit of catnip added (served in a wine glass, naturally, because he was the MAYOR). Tourists came from all over the world just to meet him!

Stubbs survived a dog attack, being shot by a BB gun, falling into a fryer (thankfully it was off!), and being hit by a car. He truly had nine lives. During his long mayoralty, he ignored all town issues with complete dignity and calm — as cats do.

Stubbs passed away in 2017 at the ripe old age of 20. The whole town mourned. A statue was later built in his honour outside the store where he took his daily catnip water. 🍷

Fun Fact!

Stubbs received fan mail from all over the world! His owners answered every letter on his behalf. He never responded to any policy questions.

Grumpy Cat

In 2012, a young woman named Tabatha Bundesen posted a photo online of her cat Tardar Sauce, who had the most perfectly grumpy expression anyone had ever seen on a cat. Within hours, the internet went absolutely wild!

Tardar Sauce — soon nicknamed "Grumpy Cat" — had a real condition called feline dwarfism and an underbite, which gave her that permanently unimpressed look. But despite looking grumpy, her owner says she was actually a very sweet and gentle cat!

The memes spread everywhere. "I had fun once. It was awful." "Monday." People used her face to express every grumpy feeling ever felt by any human in history. She became the face of the entire internet.

Grumpy Cat became one of the most famous cats who ever lived! She starred in a Christmas movie, released a book, had her own merchandise line (mugs, t-shirts, plushies), and appeared on TV shows and magazine covers. Her family earned millions from licensing her image.

At the peak of her fame, Grumpy Cat was worth more than many famous human celebrities. She attended film festivals, had her own manager, and even had her pawprint on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Tardar Sauce passed away peacefully in 2019. The internet paused for a moment of collective sadness. Then someone made a meme about it. 😄

Fun Fact!

Grumpy Cat's 2014 Christmas movie was one of the most watched films on the Lifetime channel that year. A cat. Starring in a movie. True story!

Pangur Bán

The Cat Who Inspired a Famous Poem

Over 1,200 years ago, in a cold monastery somewhere in Ireland or possibly Austria, an Irish monk was sitting at his desk translating a difficult Latin text. His white cat, Pangur Bán (which means "white fuller" in Old Irish), was sitting beside him, hunting mice.

The monk looked at his cat, smiled, and wrote one of the most beautiful poems ever written about a cat — in Old Irish, on the margins of a religious manuscript!

The poem compares the monk's work of "hunting" for knowledge and understanding with the cat's work of hunting mice. "I and Pangur Bán, my cat, 'tis a like task we are at; hunting mice is his delight, hunting words I sit all night."

The poem was discovered centuries later inside the Reichenau Primer, an ancient manuscript now kept in a library in Austria. No one knows the monk's name — he signed it only with the cat's.

Pangur Bán became one of the most famous cats in literary history. The poem has been translated into dozens of languages and has inspired songs, paintings, and even an Oscar-nominated animated film called "The Secret of Kells." Not bad for a medieval mouser! 📜

Fun Fact!

The original manuscript is over 1,200 years old and still survives! You can see the monk's handwriting in the margins where he wrote the poem about his cat.

Dewey Readmore Books

The Library Cat Who Changed a Town

Dewey Readmore Books — The Library Cat Who Changed a Town

📷 Spencer Public Library / Public Domain

On a bitterly cold January morning in 1988, in Spencer, Iowa, a tiny orange tabby kitten was dropped into the book return slot of the public library. It was -40°C outside. The librarian, Vicki Myron, found him shivering among the returned books.

The library decided to keep him. Staff held a vote to name him — and the winning name was magnificent: Dewey Readmore Books (after the Dewey Decimal library classification system, of course!).

Dewey became the official library cat. For 19 years, he greeted every single visitor who walked through the door. He had a special talent for knowing who needed a cuddle — he'd leap into the laps of lonely people, sad children, elderly visitors who hadn't spoken to anyone in days.

He turned the Spencer Public Library into a destination. Visitors came from other states just to meet Dewey. The library's visitor numbers more than doubled. Hundreds of articles were written about him in newspapers and magazines around the world.

When Dewey passed away in 2006 aged 19, the library received condolence letters from every single US state and 17 countries. Librarian Vicki Myron wrote a book about him that became a New York Times bestseller and was translated into 25 languages. 📖

The town of Spencer has never forgotten their most famous resident.

Fun Fact!

Dewey had a favourite party trick — he loved to sleep inside the bag of whoever was reading the best book that day. He always seemed to know which book was most interesting!
