A Cat Is Expecting!
When a cat is going to have babies, we say she is pregnant or expecting a litter. You can sometimes tell because her tummy gets a little rounder and you might be able to feel tiny bumps inside!
Cat pregnancies last about 63–65 days — that's just over 2 months! Compare that to humans, who are pregnant for about 9 months. Cats are in a much bigger hurry! 😄
🐾 Did you know? A mama cat is called a queen. A daddy cat is called a tom. Baby cats are called kittens!
What's Happening Inside?
Tiny Seeds
The kittens start out as tinier than a grain of rice! They're growing super fast inside mama, but she looks totally normal.
Heartbeats Begin
Now the kittens have tiny hearts beating! A vet can feel them with their hands. Their ears, eyes, and little paws are forming.
Almost Ready!
Mama's tummy grows rounder each day. The kittens have fur now! They can even move around — you might see mama's belly wiggle! 🎉
Building a Cozy Nest
A few days before her kittens are born, mama cat starts looking for a safe, quiet, warm spot to give birth. This is called nesting. She might rearrange blankets, sneak under a bed, or find a cozy box.

Newborn kittens can't control their own body temperature, so a warm nest is super important!

Welcome, Kittens!
When kittens are born, they are tiny, wet, and completely helpless. Each kitten is about the size of a large lemon! They are born with their eyes and ears sealed shut.
The mama cat cleans each kitten right away, which helps them breathe and feel warm. She also feeds them her milk, which has special nutrients to help them grow big and strong!

Sleeping All Day
Brand new kittens sleep almost 24 hours a day! They drink mama's milk and snuggle for warmth. They can already purr — even as newborns! 💜

Their tiny eyes slowly start to open! All kittens are born with blue eyes, no matter what color they'll be when they grow up.
Taking First Steps
Wobbly little legs start working! Kittens begin to explore their nest and start using a litter box. Their baby teeth also come in.
Playtime Begins!
Now the real fun starts! Kittens wrestle with each other, pounce on things, and start eating soft kitten food alongside mama's milk.

At 8 weeks old, kittens are usually big enough to go to loving forever homes — but they always remember how to purr thanks to mama! 🐾

Kittens sleep up to 20 hours a day because growing takes a LOT of energy!
All kittens are born with blue eyes. Their real eye color appears at around 6–8 weeks.

Kittens are adorable, but there are millions of cats and kittens in shelters that need loving homes. Responsible pet owners choose to spay (females) or neuter (males) their cats, which means a vet does a safe operation so the cat won't have more babies.
