All About the Tabby 📖

Tabby cats are actually not a specific breed — they are any cat with a special striped, swirled, or spotted coat pattern! They are the most common type of cat in the whole world, and they come in dozens of colors. Tabbies are known for being super friendly, playful, and easy to get along with, making them one of the best first cats for kids.

Tabby cats have been living alongside humans for thousands of years! Ancient Egyptians loved tabby cats, and they even appear in some of the oldest cat paintings ever found.

The tabby pattern comes in four different types — classic (big swirls), mackerel (narrow stripes like a tiger), spotted (dots!), and ticked (each hair has bands of color). The most famous tabby pattern is the orange tabby, sometimes called a marmalade cat.

Did you know that most orange cats are boys? About 80% of orange tabby cats are male — scientists think it has something to do with the genes that control coat color. Tabby cats are wonderful companions because they tend to love cuddles just as much as they love playing — a perfect balance for kids who want an active AND snuggly cat!
