All About the Russian Blue 📖

Russian Blue cats are famous for their stunning double-layered coat that shimmers silver-blue in the light, and their brilliant emerald-green eyes. They are elegant, quiet, and incredibly loyal to their families — but can be a little shy around strangers at first. Once a Russian Blue decides you are their person, they will follow you everywhere and be your devoted companion for life. They are also one of the longest-living cat breeds, often reaching 15-20 years!

Russian Blue cats are thought to have originated in the port city of Arkhangelsk in northern Russia, where they were sometimes called Archangel Cats. Sailors fell in love with these beautiful grey cats and brought them on voyages across Europe, where they quickly became prized pets of royalty. Russian Blue cats were reportedly favorites of Russian Czars and the British royal family!

The Russian Blue’s coat is truly one of a kind. It’s a double coat — a dense underlayer and a silkier outer layer — and the tips of each hair are silver, which makes the coat shimmer and seem to glow in the light. Running your hand across a Russian Blue’s back is one of the most satisfying things in the world!

Russian Blues are known for being a little reserved when they first meet new people, but don’t mistake shyness for unfriendliness. Once they warm up to you, they become incredibly devoted companions. They are also very smart — Russian Blues can learn to open doors, fetch toys, and even recognize their owner’s daily schedule, often waiting by the door right before you’re due to arrive home. For families looking for a calm, gentle, and deeply loyal cat, the Russian Blue is absolutely perfect. 💙
