All About the Norwegian Forest Cat 📖
Norwegian Forest Cats, nicknamed Wegies, are magnificent cats with thick double-layered coats that are completely waterproof — perfect for surviving Norway's freezing winters and heavy snowfall. They are natural-born climbers who love being up high, and their strong, curved claws allow them to climb down trees headfirst, which most cats cannot do. Wegies are gentle giants who love people but also enjoy their independence.
Norwegian Forest Cats survived for thousands of years living partly wild in the Scandinavian forests, which is why they still have such powerful hunting instincts and love to climb and explore outdoors. They were brought back from near extinction after World War II by Norwegian cat breeders who worked very hard to protect the breed.
These cats have two layers of fur — a woolly undercoat for warmth and a glossy, water-resistant topcoat — which means raindrops actually roll right off them! They shed their thick winter coat every spring in a process called blowing their coat, and during summer they look almost like a completely different, much slimmer cat. Norwegian Forest Cats are patient, calm companions who love families and are excellent with other pets.
