Cornish Rex cats have the most amazing coats in the cat world — instead of straight fur, their coats are made of soft, wavy curls that feel like velvet or warm suede. They only have one layer of fur (most cats have three!), which makes them feel incredibly soft to pet. Cornish Rex cats never really grow up — they stay playful and kitten-like their whole lives, making them endlessly entertaining companions for kids.
The Cornish Rex is one of the most unusual-looking cats in the world, and that’s exactly what makes them so wonderful! Their curly, wavy coats are caused by a natural genetic mutation that was first discovered on a farm in Cornwall, England in 1950. The original curly kitten, named Kallibunker, was so unique that breeders worked hard to create a whole new breed from him.
Because Cornish Rex cats only have one thin layer of fur instead of three, they actually feel warm to the touch — like a little living hot water bottle! They do get cold more easily than other cats, so they love to snuggle under blankets and sit in sunny spots.
Cornish Rex cats are famous for staying “kitten-brained” their whole lives — even a 10-year-old Cornish Rex will still want to play fetch and chase toys around the room. They are extremely social, love everyone they meet, and will try to join in on everything you do.
